America: Revisited

americaI've got the guts enought to admit it. I like America, the all-too-easy to discount easy listening folk band from the 70s. I bought all their LPs as cut-outs in the late 1970s and I have quite a fondness for them. Once you get beyond the mind-think of "I'm not supposed to like this band", then the album and others from the early 70s can entertain and even delight. Sure, the lyrics can drive even the most ardent surrealist into fits of aggrivated aggitation. Yeah, some of the melodic ideas seem pat from this vantage point. But, holistically heard, it's good. Sometimes surprisingly good. Plus, the CD sounds like cut grass in the summertime. Doing chores for dad and the lightning bugs are just coming out. It takes me back. Sonically. Some CDs/LPs do that better than others. This one is Janus - it takes me back and propells me forward at the same time. No easy feat.
